Focus on getting well. A colleague holds your caseload.

Surgery, illness, treatment or recovery. We match you with a licensed therapist in your state so your clients are cared for while you heal.

What happens to my clients if I need medical leave?

Quick answer

A licensed colleague in your state becomes their point of contact and sees anyone who needs support until you return. You don't need to share your diagnosis: a short, honest message such as "I'm taking medical leave and will be back in the spring" is enough.

What makes medical leave different

Dates can change

Recovery doesn't always follow a schedule. Plan coverage with some room, and update your dates from your dashboard if they move.

Privacy matters

Clients need to know who to contact, not why you're away. You decide how much to share.

Income planning

Self-employed therapists usually aren't covered by FMLA. If you have disability insurance or a state leave program, check waiting periods early.

Step by step

How to plan medical leave coverage

  1. As soon as you know

    Step 1: Request coverage

Share your expected dates and caseload. Last-minute requests are supported too.

  2. Before your leave

    Step 2: Choose your colleague

Invite the match who fits your clients. You pay $49 only once they accept.

  3. Before your leave

Step 3: Tell clients and hand off

Share who to contact, get consent to share information, and use our templates for the handoff.

  4. While you recover

    Step 4: Step back fully

Your colleague is the point of contact. Update your return date if your recovery takes longer.

What to tell your clients

  • That you're taking medical leave (no details needed)
  • Your expected return, or that you'll share a date later
  • Who to contact while you're away, and how
  • What to do in an emergency (988 or 911)

Getting coverage for your clients

Tell us your dates and what your clients need. We match you with up to three licensed, in-state therapists. Invite the one you want; once they accept, you pay $49 to unlock their contact details.

Common questions

Do I have to tell clients why I'm on leave?

No. Saying you're taking medical leave and naming who will support them is enough. Share more only if it's right for you.

What if my recovery takes longer than planned?

Update your coverage dates from your dashboard and let your covering colleague know. Coverage can last as long as you need.

What if I'm suddenly unable to arrange this myself?

Name a trusted colleague in a professional (clinical) will ahead of time so someone can contact clients for you. See our guide to unexpected time off.
