Thank you for your message.
I'm on parental leave until March 14. While I'm away, my clients are being seen by a licensed colleague in our state, who has everything they need to support you.
With care, and back soon.
How does parental leave work for a therapist in private practice?
When you run your own practice, there's no employer to arrange cover for you. You choose your dates, tell your clients, and arrange a licensed colleague to see them while you're away, so care continues and clients are much more likely to return to you afterward.
- Paid leave: self-employed therapists usually aren't covered by FMLA, and some states let you opt in to paid family leave. Check your state's program early.
- Your clients: every major ethics code (APA, AAMFT, ACA, NASW) expects a plan for continuity of care while you're away.
- Your license: your covering therapist must be licensed in the state where each client is located. We will match you with the right therapist to cover your practice while you are away, based on the states you are licensed in, the populations you serve, and even the insurances you are in network with.

A simple timeline
- 3 to 4 months before

- 6 to 8 weeks before
Step 2: Choose your colleague and tell clients
Meet your matches, invite the one who fits, and start letting clients know who will support them.
- 2 weeks before
Step 3: Hand off
Share consent forms using our templates, introduce clients who want it, and set your out-of-office.
- While you're away
Step 4: Clients stay cared for
Your covering therapist holds sessions and is the point of contact, so you can actually be off.
Getting coverage for your clients
Tell us your dates and what your clients need. We match you with up to three licensed, in-state therapists by insurance, populations and approach. Invite the one you want; once they accept, you pay $49 to unlock their contact details and plan the handoff together.
No subscription. Not charged unless someone accepts. Covering therapists bill clients through their own practice.
How far ahead should I arrange coverage for maternity leave?
Three to four months before your due date is ideal, so there's time to meet matches and tell clients calmly. Shorter notice is supported too.
What if my baby arrives early?
Plan the handoff a few weeks before your due date. If your dates change, you can update your coverage dates from your dashboard.
How long can parental leave coverage last?
As long as you need, from a few weeks to several months. You set the dates.
