Who covers my therapy clients while I'm on vacation?
A licensed therapist in your state who agrees to be your clients' point of contact, and to see anyone who needs support, while you're away. Arrange it three to four weeks ahead, tell clients in session, and put your colleague's details in your out-of-office. Therapy Coverage helps you with this process. We match you with the right therapist to cover for you and give you templates to share with your clients to notify them of your leave, so you can truly disconnect from work.

Why vacation coverage matters
You actually rest
Checking messages from the beach isn't time off. Burnout is common in mental health work, and real breaks are part of preventing it.
Clients feel held
Clients cope better with a break when they know exactly who to contact, instead of a voicemail that says to call 988.
It's good practice
Ethics codes for counselors, MFTs, social workers and psychologists all expect a plan for continuity of care when you're away.
How to plan vacation coverage
- 3 to 4 weeks before
Step 1: Request coverage
Share your dates and caseload. We match you with up to three licensed therapists in your state.
- 2 to 3 weeks before
Step 2: Choose your colleague
Meet your matches, invite the one who fits. You pay $49 only once they accept.
- The last two sessions
Step 3: Tell your clients
Share your dates and who to contact. Get consent to share basic information with your colleague.
- Your last day
Step 4: Set your out-of-office
Include your return date, your colleague's contact details, and 988 or 911 for emergencies.
What to tell your clients
- The dates you'll be away and the day you're back
- Who to contact while you're away, and how
- That it's normal to check in with the covering therapist if things feel hard
Getting coverage for your clients
Tell us your dates and what your clients need. We match you with up to three licensed, in-state therapists. Invite the one you want; once they accept, you pay $49 to unlock their contact details.
Common questions
Do I need coverage for a one-week vacation?
It's strongly recommended. Even a week is long for a client in crisis, and a named colleague is better than an emergency line alone.
Will the covering therapist see all of my clients?
Usually not. Most clients just need to know someone is there. The colleague sees anyone who reaches out or needs a session, and you can flag clients who may need closer support.
How much does it cost?
$49 one-time, charged only after a covering therapist accepts. Your colleague bills any sessions through their own practice.
